Impact of Migration
Migration can be a source of trauma due to experiences like war, persecution and displacement. In addition, language, employment and housing challenges often arise when settling in a new country. Even those born in Switzerland can face struggles when growing up between multiple cultures. The University Psychiatric Clinics (UPK) Basel offer outpatient and inpatient support for individuals with a migration background.
Living far from home in a different culture can be enriching but also challenging, particularly when integration is difficult, cultural values clash or existential fears arise. These issues can lead to despair, depression or anxiety. Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, trauma and pain disorders can hinder successful professional and social integration.
UPK Basel’s Transcultural Outpatient Clinic treats people whose mental health issues are linked to migration or cultural background. Interpreters are available for assessment, consultation and treatment, if needed.
