Research Cluster Molecular and Cognitive Neurosciences (MCN)
Head: Prof. Dr. Andreas Papassotiropoulos und Prof. Dr. Dominique de Quervain
The Research Cluster Molecular and Cognitive Neurosciences (MCN) is dedicated to advancing the understanding of human cognitive and emotional processes and developing new treatments for psychiatric disorders. The Division of Molecular Neuroscience is led by Prof. Andreas Papassotiropoulos, while the Division of Cognitive Neuroscience is led by Prof. Dominique de Quervain. Together, they co-direct the MCN, uniting their research teams to create a collaborative and synergistic effort. With over 20 years of scientific partnership, they have published numerous studies in leading journals such as Science, Cell, Nature Neuroscience, Neuron, and PNAS, focusing particularly on the genetic and neural underpinnings of human cognitive and emotional functions.
The primary goal of the MCN is to deepen the understanding of human cognitive and emotional processes in both health and disease, thereby contributing to the development of novel therapies. The cluster employs a diverse range of methods, including molecular studies in C. elegans, human genomics, functional neuroimaging, transcranial magnetic stimulation, virtual reality, and clinical trials.
Members of the MCN come from various disciplines, including psychiatry, biology, genetics, psychology, mathematics, and engineering, creating a rich interdisciplinary environment aimed at advancing research in human cognition and emotion.
