Sleep Disorders
Do you struggle to fall asleep, wake often at night or feel unrefreshed after sleep? Or do you sleep well but still feel constantly tired? Do you have nightmares or sleepwalk? There are many types of sleep disorders. Specialists at the University Psychiatric Clinics (UPK) Basel are experienced in diagnosing chronic sleep disorders and providing guideline-based treatment.
Sleep problems can result from shift work, medication side effects, chronic stress or physical and mental health conditions. One common effect: reduced quality of life.
Our Support
As part of the Centre for Sleep and Chronomedicine at the Basel University Hospitals, we assess all types of sleep disorders:
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep
- Restless Legs Syndrome (night-time leg restlessness)
- Sleep-related breathing disorders (snoring, pauses in breathing)
- Disrupted day-night rhythms
- Sleep behaviour disorders (e.g. sleepwalking or acting out dreams)
- Sleep addiction (excessive sleep need, including chronic fatigue syndrome)
The Centre is a collaboration between UPK Basel, University Hospital Basel, University Children’s Hospital Basel (UKBB) and the Centre for Chronobiology.
In our sleep lab, we conduct inpatient studies. Portable devices are available for home assessments. After evaluation, we recommend or start targeted treatment.
Our team includes psychiatric specialists in sleep disorders, working closely with pulmonology, neurology and chronobiology experts. Other disciplines are involved as needed.
Treatment follows current guidelines and may include medicated and non-medicated treatment, including chronomedicine and cognitive behavioural therapy.
