Autism Specialist Unit
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are pervasive developmental disorders characterised, among other things, by difficulties with social interaction and interpersonal communication, as well as a reduced understanding of social situations. They may also involve restricted and stereotyped activities and interests, along with, in some cases, significant limitations in everyday practical skills. In recent years, ASD has received increasing attention in clinical and scientific research, and with a prevalence of around 1%, it is now recognised as a relatively common psychiatric condition.
ASD can affect various areas of life, with the presentation differing depending on the severity of symptoms and the individual’s age. Early, comprehensive and differentiated assessment is important in order to develop a treatment plan tailored to the individual needs of the child or young person and their family. Depending on the requirements, collaboration with other specialist services takes place.
In our specialist unit, we offer families a comprehensive autism-specific diagnostic assessment. This includes evaluating autistic symptoms using established and standardised assessment tools, assessing developmental level and/or intellectual abilities, and identifying any additional child and adolescent psychiatric difficulties that may be present. A paediatric neurological assessment should also be carried out alongside this process.
Following the diagnostic assessment, we offer consultations for families and professionals involved in the child’s care, with a strong focus on developing an understanding of the condition. We also provide guidance regarding parenting approaches, suitable therapeutic options, and future steps.
