Affective Disorders (S2)

The S2 department has 18 inpatient beds for the diagnostic assessment and treatment of people with depression and bipolar disorders.

The aim of inpatient treatment is to provide individuals in a challenging phase of their lives with stabilising support and to make the necessary therapeutic resources available in order to alleviate symptoms and restore psychological stability. The treatment pursues several key objectives:

  • Symptom relief
  • Crisis intervention and stabilisation
  • Development of coping strategies
  • Regaining everyday functioning
  • Social and occupational reintegration
  • Relapse prevention

To achieve this, our treatment programme is individually tailored and includes, among other things:

  • Diagnostic assessment
  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Psychotherapy
  • Interventional procedures (electroconvulsive therapy, ketamine, rTMS)
  • Regular medical, psychological and nursing consultations
  • Individual and group psychotherapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Exercise and sports therapy
  • Music therapy
  • Animal-assisted therapy
  • Horticultural therapy

In order to prepare a successful return to life outside the clinic, we also place great emphasis on:

  • Comprehensive social work support regarding housing, employment and financial matters
  • Assistance in organising onward outpatient treatment
  • Communication with outpatient care providers
  • Involvement of relatives and employers

For people from the Canton of Basel-Stadt, we also enable, in individual cases, a subsequent day-clinic treatment on the ward to facilitate the transition to outpatient care.

The S2 department also offers a specialised concept for mother-and-child treatment and for people with recurrent crises.
