Family Law Service

The Family Law Service is part of the Juvenile Forensics Department at the UPK Campus. Its main areas of work include preparing expert assessments in cases involving separation, divorce and risks to child welfare, as well as providing advice and support to parents, children, authorities and professionals on matters relating to these areas.

Our services include:

We prepare expert assessments, both recommendation-based and process-oriented, on behalf of civil courts and guardianship authorities. These cover matters including:

  • Parental responsibility following separation or divorce
  • Where children should live following separation or divorce (residence and care arrangements)
  • Contact arrangements between children and their parents
  • Parents’ parenting capacity, particularly where there may be concerns about a child’s welfare
  • Whether a child should be removed from or remain in their family home where there are concerns about their welfare, including assessments relating to foster care arrangements

We do not provide so-called *privately commissioned expert reports*, meaning reports requested by parents or private individuals. The costs of an assessment are charged to the authority or organisation that commissions it.

  • Child-focused support in cases involving difficulties with contact arrangements, including court-ordered interventions
  • Psychotherapeutic support for children, parts of families or whole families dealing with separation or divorce, including court-ordered interventions
  • Voluntary advice and support for parents, adolescents and children in highly conflicted family situations involving separation or divorce

  • Advice for courts, authorities and legal professionals on working with highly conflicted parents and families
  • Support for civil courts when judges conduct hearings with children
  • Training and professional development for judges, staff of Child and Adult Protection Authorities (KESB), and legal professionals

The costs of these services are charged to the authority or organisation that commissions them.
