Self-help groups (external services)
Self-help groups bring together people who share a common experience, such as a mental health condition or a difficult life situation. Participants support one another by sharing their experiences and learning from each other. The groups are self-organised, operate without professional leadership, and are based on voluntary participation, equality and confidentiality.
Talking to people in similar situations can provide relief, reduce feelings of loneliness and open up new perspectives. Other people’s experiences can help participants develop their own coping strategies, build resilience, and find renewed hope and enjoyment in life.
If you are looking for a suitable self-help group, you can search through directories or visit the website of the Self-Help Centre for information and personal advice. In many cases, you can attend a group initially without making a commitment, to see whether it is right for you.
